Authorship Criteria

CHANNEL: Jurnal Komunikasi upholds ethical standards for authorship and contributorship in accordance with the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the authorship recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Authorship acknowledges scholarly contributions and entails responsibility for the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of published research.

Authorship Eligibility

To qualify for authorship, each individual listed as an author must meet all four of the following criteria:

  1. Substantial contribution to the conception or design of the study, or to the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of research data.
  2. Intellectual contribution to the manuscript through drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content.
  3. Final approval of the version to be published.
  4. Accountability for all aspects of the work, including ensuring that questions concerning the accuracy or integrity of any part of the research are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All individuals who meet these criteria should be appropriately recognized as authors. All authors must agree to the final author list and their respective contributions before submission.

Non-Author Contributors and Acknowledgments

Individuals who contribute to a research project but do not meet all authorship criteria should not be listed as authors. Their contributions may instead be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section, with their permission.

Such contributions may include technical assistance, language editing, administrative support, data collection assistance without substantial intellectual involvement, or general supervision that does not meet the authorship criteria.

Unacceptable Authorship Practices

CHANNEL: Jurnal Komunikasi prohibits unethical authorship practices, including:

  1. Ghost authorship: omitting individuals who have made qualifying contributions to the research and manuscript.
  2. Guest, gift, or honorary authorship: listing individuals who have not made the substantial contributions required for authorship.
  3. Unjustified authorship attribution: assigning authorship to individuals who do not meet the established criteria or excluding qualified contributors without appropriate justification.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that the author list accurately reflects the scholarly contributions made to the work. Any changes to authorship after submission must be justified, agreed upon by all affected authors, and approved by the editor.

Contributions and Author Accountability

Authors are encouraged to clearly identify their respective contributions to the research and manuscript. Where appropriate, a contributor statement using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) may be provided to clarify individual responsibilities.

All listed authors share responsibility for the integrity of the published work and must cooperate in addressing editorial queries, corrections, or investigations concerning the research.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including ChatGPT and other large language models, do not qualify for authorship and must not be listed as authors or co-authors.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and proper attribution of their manuscripts, including content produced or modified with AI assistance. The use of AI tools for substantive purposes, such as generating or developing manuscript content, analyzing or processing data, or producing research outputs, must be transparently disclosed in the appropriate section of the manuscript, such as the Methodology, Acknowledgments, or a dedicated AI Use Declaration, as applicable.

Routine spelling, grammar, and language-editing assistance may be treated differently from substantive AI-generated contributions, subject to the journal's applicable AI policy. AI tools must not be used to fabricate data, references, research findings, or other scholarly content.

Authors must verify all AI-assisted outputs and ensure that their use complies with research ethics, data protection, confidentiality, and applicable legal and institutional requirements.

Editorial Oversight

The editorial team of CHANNEL: Jurnal Komunikasi reserves the right to request clarification or supporting information regarding authorship and individual contributions when necessary. Suspected authorship misconduct will be handled in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies and relevant COPE guidance.

Failure to comply with these criteria may result in editorial action, including rejection of a manuscript, correction of the published record, or other appropriate measures depending on the nature and severity of the violation.
